ESTHER TEICHMANN
MONDSCHWIMMEN
21.06. – 30.08.2015

ZEPHYR – Raum für Fotografie opened the exhibition “Mondschwimmen”, of London based artist Esther Teichmann’s first museum exhibition in Germany, on June 21, 2015. The show furnishes an overview of her latest works, some of which were specially created for the Mannheim show. The young exceptionally talented artist’s works are not easily classified in traditional genres. Photographs, films, collages and sculptures are combined on 420 sqm into a multimedia installation experienced by the senses. This associative, unified work of art leads viewers into a realm of sensuality, intimacy, loss, eroticism and desire.

The core of Esther Teichmann’s work is her exploration of fantasy and its sources, the experience of longing and loss playing a special role in this context. Teichmann not only avails of photography but also of film, collage, sculpture and painting to present abstract themes with art. In the exhibition “Mondschwimmen”, she has combined her own photographs with found pictures. Sculptures are made of painted corals and music specially composed for the presentation of the meditative video can be heard. The artist combines autobiographical and fictional material in this poetic conflation of media: She transports visitors to a dream world.

Born in 1980 in Karlsruhe, Esther Teichmann studied photography and earned her doctorate at the Royal College of Art in London. In 2014, she won the Prix Photographique Ville de Levallois and the associated exhibition “Fractal Scars, Salt Water and Tears” was shown in Paris and London. She has taken part in exhibitions at relevant institutions for contemporary photography all over the world and also works as a curator in London. Teichmann was a senior lecturer at the University of Brighton from 2005 to 2011 and at California College of the Arts in San Francisco from 2012 and 2013. At present, she teaches in London at the College of Communication of University of the Arts and at the Royal College of Art.
