POLICE PHOTOGRAPHY IN MANNHEIM 1946-1971
16.09.2007 - 06.04.2008
Police photography from 1946-71 is the theme of this exhibition. ZEPHYR presents in the museum 275 photographs; a further 55 are exhibited at the Mannheim Police Headquarters. The exhibition is divided into themes such as "weapons and traces", "numbers and signs", as well as the documentation of a raid on a money transport vehicle, a case that formed the basis for Germany's fist crime movie after WW II. Early crime scene photography served the documentation of evidence, but nevertheless developed stylistically. Groups of photos like those under the heading "rooms" give viewers direct access to a private world, and show how the accidental and ephemeral becomes central in Police photography, a genre that recently comes to be valued for its unusual aesthetic. There are also photographs of victims, which are radical different from the sensationalist media images we are now used to.
